Hello, outdoor science enthusiasts! As we continue to explore the amazing world of PLA 3D printing and design, we’re excited to share another milestone in our family’s journey. Just like our 8-year-old, we recently introduced our 10-year-old to 3D printing and design, hoping that this skill will open up new possibilities in both indoor and outdoor adventures. Here’s a snapshot of his experience so far.

First Steps

Our 10-year-old’s introduction to 3D printing and design was a bit different from his younger sibling’s experience. He ambitiously decided to create a chicken using various standard 3D shapes, all without any tutorials or instruction. This turned out to be a challenging project, and he got frustrated and needed to take a break from it.

The Comeback

After some time away, our 10-year-old returned to his chicken design with renewed determination. He managed to pull together an adorable little “bok bok chicken” using the shapes he had previously worked with. The chicken wasn’t perfect—its leg connection to the foot was a bit too weak, causing them to break apart. However, it was well-balanced, adorable, and most importantly, he created it.

Learning from Mistakes

Our young designer didn’t let the broken leg discourage him. Instead, he glued the pieces of his 3D sculpture back together and went back to the drawing board to redesign the chicken. His goal was to create an equally adorable but more stable version, learning from the challenges he faced in his initial design.

Embracing Learning

Introducing our 10-year-old to 3D printing and design has been an incredible experience so far. By allowing him to take on complex projects, make mistakes, and learn from his mistakes, we’re nurturing his creativity, problem-solving skills, and perseverance. We can’t wait to see what he comes up with next, and how these skills will translate into our future indoor and outdoor adventures.
